The Wednesday Word reported recently that James was expected to sign a one-year deal back at Hillsborough after impressing in training, and now his return has been announced officially.

He said of his return, “I didn’t think when I left two years ago that I’d be coming back here being able to wear the shirt again, but obviously I’m absolutely delighted.

“From the first training session I had here, I was made to feel really welcome. The changing room is a really good changing room, a great group of lads.

“I’ve been promoted from League One three times, once with Wednesday, and you can try and give whatever wisdom and whatever help you can for the younger players. We all want to push each other as much as we can.”

Meanwhile, Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said, “We are delighted to welcome Reece back to Sheffield Wednesday. In addition to providing cover and balance for the squad, he is a fantastic player for the dressing room and the training pitch.

“Often these players are not the ones who get the limelight, but they play an essential role within the group. Reece has a deep feeling for the club from his past here and he is a perfect fit for what we need right now.”

James’ arrival makes it 15 new signings for the Owls this summer, with a handful more expected before the window closes on September 1st.

A huge crowd was left disappointed on Thursday evening as Aden Baldwin’s goal gave the Bantams the victory and three big points at Hillsborough… It was a game of two halves in many ways, with the hosts bossing the first half before the visitors took control in the second.

Baldwin was the top performer according to WhoScored.com, with his winning goal, nine clearances, six aerial duel wins and five successful tackles (100%) earning him a 9.0 rating as he helped his side to a clean sheet in S6.

The next two highest-ranked performers came from men in blue and white, though, with two Owls putting in a statistically sound effort in the most recent Yorkshire derby.

Wednesday Ladies took to the pitch on Sunday afternoon in the preliminary round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup for their first competitive game of the 2026/27 season. After a successful preseason which saw Wednesday Ladies go undefeated - and retain a number of key players - the team looked to start the season with a win.

It was a tense start, too, with the sun beating down overhead, and both teams seemed to be sizing each other up. Wednesday showed promise, with some dangerous deliveries and neat bits of link-up play, while Chesterfield had a few blocked shots on goal.

The visitors had the first major chances, too, with Annie Hall’s smart deliveries from corners almost giving the Owls the opening twice. One ball floated over everyone and looked destined to nestle in the back of the net, but the post came to Chesterfield’s rescue, allowing them to clear the rebound. The subsequent corner also went to the back post, and was met this time by Hannah Baines, who was frustrated again by the woodwork as the ball bounced agonisingly along the bar.

Despite the Owlesses’ positive start, it was the home side who got the opener midway through the half. They worked a throw-in into Zoey Borland in a dangerous position inside the box, who spun away from her marker and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, leaving goalkeeper Holly Coughlan with no chance.

Chesterfield had the advantage going into half time, but Wednesday made a positive start to the second half. Manager, Kieron Lee, had switched to a more attacking formation and brought on some attacking firepower - which did certainly impact the game. Striker, Courtney Kaye, added presence in attack, and captain, Jodie Stancill, seemed to be freed up to showcase some more technical flair.

And SWLFC were awarded for their positivity just after the 60-minute mark. Their pressure continued after a dangerous shot led to a goal kick as Wednesday quickly regained possession, and Baines drove into the box before sliding the ball across to substitute Sheridan Betts, who coolly finished.

At 1-1, Wednesday looked to build momentum, but Chesterfield were a strong opponent and posed a constant threat from set-pieces. They regained the lead from a corner, with Tayana Dunn delivering to the back post, with Maisie Gallagher - who put in a Player of the Match performance in defence for Chesterfield - ghosted in to meet the ball.

Chesterfield began to apply some more pressure, and their third goal was conceded in an unlucky manner. Dunn drove at Wednesday’s retreating defence and did well to create some space before playing the ball to Cerys Brooks, who had worked hard to get forward and join the attack. Her initial shot drew a good save from Coughlan, but the ball rebounded off Brooks, and this time the ball trickled into the bottom corner.

It was an uphill battle to come from two goals behind, and Wednesday simply weren’t able to fight back. The final whistle brought the Owls’ cup campaign to a close at the first hurdle, and it was the hosts who progressed into the next round.

Lee reflected candidly on the match afterwards, insisting that he was ‘proud of the girls’ and their performance, adding ‘it is what it is, and we wish Chesterfield the best for the season’

Wednesday will now turn their attention to the start of their league campaign in two weeks’ time, which begins with a visit to Bottesford Town on Sunday 6th September.

A strong second half against Leyton Orient secured all three points in their opening game, but a very promising opening stanza vs Bradford City wasn’t enough as they fell to a second-half goal from the Bantams.

As is so often the case, as Wednesdayites we’re floating between the extremes of ‘everything’s great’ to ‘everything’s awful’ when it comes to what’s happening on the field of play, so here at The Wednesday Word we went in search of some opinions from a couple of unbiased experts…

When it comes to the English Football League, you won’t mind better than the Not The Top 20 lads on that front, and NTT20.COM does a great job of covering all three leagues in an interesting and informative way.

Here’s what they had to say:

As the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, the Sky Sports commentator said that this result would serve as a ‘reality check’ for Sheffield Wednesday. It shouldn’t, but the first half performance served to show what could be possible this season.

As someone who had Wednesday 1st in my own personal 1-24 predictions, and thinks Simon Wilson is quietly building one of the best sides in the league, it was alarming to see Bradford sent off favourites with the bookmakers, and off the back of a similar gamble on Leyton Orient last weekend. There’s a reason it’s hard to make money gambling, and closing lines can offer a telling insight into how teams are rated by those much smarter than us. That the market has spoken so loudly against Wednesday in their first two games could be cause for alarm.

Despite the good result at Orient, it wasn’t necessarily a display that could be used to justify my claim that Wednesday should be one of the title favourites. The first half against Bradford definitely was. The press was efficient and effective, with Slattery, Mitchell and Bannan consistently winning the ball in central areas as Bradford tried to break in numbers.

The result was a consistent threat on the counter-attack with plenty of men forward and it was only some wasteful finishing and some smart saves that stopped Wednesday being at least one up at the break.

Once so reliant on Bannan for creativity, they now have Slattery’s progressive passing with Barry and Gray’s carrying ability wide. With this trio also hard-working off the ball, as do the deeper midfield duo, this is an attacking unit that showed that they can be aggressive out of possession and then dangerous with it.

The second half was poor, but the game was lost to a set-piece goal, and a point should have been salvaged at the death by Jamal Lowe, and I think it would have been the least Wednesday deserved for their early dominance.

The players who remain from last season haven’t won many games in recent times, nor have the fans seen many. The whole club is going through a reset, so maybe it’s no surprise that they struggled to get off the ropes when put up against them in the 48th minute.

Kieran Morrison looked lively when he came on down the right hand side in what was a rare positive in the closing minutes, but I came away from the game more convinced than ever that Wednesday are one of the teams to beat this season. If they can maintain the level of the first half for longer periods and just find that clinical edge in the final third, then most won’t be able to deal with them.

I had Sheffield Wednesday finishing 11th in my personal pre-season 1-24 predictions, and one of my biggest concerns was the scale of the squad rebuild.

It wasn’t a question of whether Wednesday’s best players were good enough to play for a League One promotion challenger: Barry Bannan, Louie Barry, Max Lowe and others clearly have top League One quality.

The bigger questions, for me, were this:

1. Would so many new pieces fit together quickly enough? It’s hard to win promotion if you’re still in ‘building’ mode for the first few months of the season.
   

2. Would Wednesday’s ninth-best, 14th-best, 17th-best and 20th-best players be good enough once injuries, suspensions and fatigue inevitably arrive?

In one summer and under transfer restrictions, is it possible to build a whole squad ready to challenge across 46 games, able to fit a specific style of play while also being adaptable to various game-states?

After a 2-1 win at Leyton Orient (poor first half, good second half) and Thursday night’s 0-1 defeat against Bradford (good first half, poor second half), I’m pleasantly surprised about some aspects. In the first half on Thursday night, Wednesday’s starting XI did look like a coherent team rather than a collection of good League One players.

Their first-half football was excellent at times. They moved the ball quickly and purposefully, regularly found their best players in useful positions and never became stuck in sterile possession. Bannan remains outstanding at finding space and moving the game forward, and I definitely underestimated Max Lowe’s ability as a passer. Good teams need playmakers in their back line as well as midfield, and Lowe gives Wednesday another route of progression to support Bannan. He defended well, too.

Callum Slattery impressed me: energetic and disruptive without the ball, intelligent in his movement and regularly arriving around the penalty area. His execution let him down in big moments, but I think he’s a good signing. Harry Gray’s movement looked mature for such a young player, but unsurprisingly for a 17-year-old, he faded as the game went on. Louie Barry provides the obvious X-factor, but Bradford defended him well as the game went on, and he’s not Mbappé.

The major concern, based on the Bradford game, is what happens when that intensity drops. The danger with a side built around the kind of energy that Pedersen’s style demands is that there can be a big difference between their best 20 minutes and their ordinary 20 minutes. If the press becomes half a yard slower, the movement slightly less coordinated or the passing a little less precise, suddenly a team that looked slick and dominant can look loose and open.

That happened in the second half. Bradford increasingly won the duels, hit the channels, won set pieces and kept Wednesday away from their goal. The midfield gaps grew, and the lack of obvious match-winners on the bench became noticeable the longer time ticked on. Their effort to get back in the game was tough to watch: the team looked exhausted and disoriented.

That links back to my biggest remaining concern: depth. If your style relies on high physical output, you need substitutes who can preserve the intensity and quality, not merely replace tired players. Going back to my original concern: are Wednesday’s ninth-best, 14th-best, 17th-best and 20th-best players good enough to support an automatic promotion push? Right now, I would say no.

There are also questions in both boxes. Wednesday look capable of being strong between the boxes, but I’m not yet convinced they look ready to win games with top execution inside either penalty area. Liam Cooper carries a lot of the aerial responsibility defensively. He did well in the first half against Bradford, but the first time he failed to head a corner away, the ball was in the net…

It’s not a team packed with aerial prowess. At the other end there is some quality and good movement without an obvious abundance of penalty box killers.

My 11th-place prediction was feeling a little conservative in the first half on the evidence of how well the team seemed to fit together. But I’m not ready to tear the prediction up yet. Football matches last 90 minutes. The season lasts 46 games and chucks up many different challenges. The first XI answered one major question, but the squad as a whole still has several more to answer, and the club are limited in their ability to address them in this transfer window.

James has been back training with the Owls for some time now, but a move to bring him on board always seemed a possibility given the club’s eagerness to find cover for first-choice left-back, Max Lowe.

The fact that the 32-year-old is a free agent also plays in his favour considering the restrictions that Wednesday are working with, as does his experience at this level and previous links to the club.

Journalist, Pete O’Rourke, reported on Thursday evening that the former Manchester United youngster had been offered a deal at Hillsborough, and it’s understood that there is now progress being made on getting something wrapped up.

The Wednesday Word is led to believe that James is set to earn himself a one-year deal back at Hillsborough following an impressive training stint at Middlewood Road, and that there aren’t expected to be any issues in terms of finalisation.

It could even be that James is on board in time to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening should things go well, and that game could provide the perfect opportunity for the full-back to get back into competitive action.

A goal from Aden Baldwin was the difference at Hillsborough in what was a game of two halves, with the Owls bossing the first half and Bradford taking control in the second.

With over 33,000 people watching on, a revitalised S6 was quietened as the game progressed, and Wednesdayites will be hoping for better when they return to League One action next week against Bromley.

Anyway, here’s some of what the two managers had to say after last night’s result:

Henrik Pedersen

“We have played two games now where we were solid in both the first half, against Bolton and against Leyton Orient, and we went from solid to strong in both the second half… Today I think we were stronger in the first half than we have seen before this season.

“I think we were very strong on the ball, we were strong in our press and verticality when we won the ball. So there was a lot of trust, a lot of belief from the first half, and then in the second half, what went wrong?

"We had a build-up from a goal kick, we lose the ball and then we conceded again after a set-piece, after the second phase, where we were not tough enough.”

Meanwhile, regarding Jordi Liongola’s absence, he told The Star, “Yesterday, I didn’t see it on the pitch, but when we came in, he had some challenge with his hamstring.”

“I hope it won’t be a long time, but right now we have to see tomorrow because everything is so new with this.”

Graham Alexander

“They’re a good team, and the crowd got behind them. It was a big game for Sheffield Wednesday after what happened last season, and I think we struggled to manage that in the first half.

“Then ahead of the second half I just reminded the players about how hard we train against each other, how good we are as individuals and as a group, and told them not to go home with any regrets for the game. Not to let it pass them by.

“And I think they showed that in the second half. I trust these players implicitly, but they’ve got to trust themselves as well.”

The Owls started brightly, creating some good chances in the opening stanza as they took it to the visitors in front of a bumper crowd of over 33,000 people at Hillsborough.

Barry Bannan and Callum Slattery both went close, but in the end it was a second half strike from Aden Baldwin that was the decider, sending the Bantams back home with three hard-earned points on the road.

For the Owls boss, he was understandably pleased with how things started for his team, but was not happy with the way that they conceded.

“I think we played a strong, strong first half,” he said afterwards. “With a big, big confidence and belief and trust in the game. Then in the second half, after the goal kick we lost the ball, get a set piece against, and we didn’t defend the second phases. For me, the first thing is that the set piece is not good enough, but the other thing is that we lost a little bit of the belief and confidence and trust from the first half.

“They started to be on top of the game, and we had to try and work our way back again, and then we had more phases where we created a few chances – but not on the same level as the first half. We had a chance at the end to get a draw, but I think it was a strong first half and then a second half where we have to learn a lot.”

Wednesday now turn their attentions to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup before welcoming Bromley to Hillsborough for their next League One outing.

The atmosphere at Hillsborough couldn’t have been much more different to a year ago when the Owls played their first home game of the 2025/26 campaign. Back then we saw protests and flyers and general sadness surround one of England’s oldest and most storied football clubs.

Tonight those things were replaced with hope, and belief, and with the likes of David Hirst, Chris Waddle, Mel Sterland and John Harkes watching on, a packed-out S6 made themselves heard. 33,138 supporters turned out for the tie, and with Mr. Sheffield Wednesday, Howard Wilkinson, in attendance, it was just the latest example of Wednesdayites feeling like they’d got their club back.

On the pitch things looked better, too - at least at first. Yan Valery returned to the starting XI, as did Liam Cooper, and there was a debut for Billy Mitchell… Louie Barry got his first start, and Kieran Morrison was named on the bench just a few hours after his loan switch from Liverpool was confirmed.

The Owls burst out of the blocks, too, and probably should’ve had the lead going into the break. Jon McCracken made a great save to keep Barry Bannan out, Callum Slattery saw an effort fly just wide of the mark, and Barry was a constant thorn in the side of the Bantams as he sought to find openings down the left-hand side.

Mitchell looked smart and Slattery continued to show glimpses of the sort of quality that has earned him rave reviews, but they weren’t able to take the chances… It’s not a story that Wednesdayites are unfamiliar with.

So for all the positivity that surrounds Wednesday at the moment, there will have been a bit of ‘I’ve seen this movie before’ from the home fans.

And so it played out. Just two minutes into the second half, the Owls’ regular Achilles heel showed itself again as they failed to deal with a set piece, and Aden Baldwin was on hand to fire home from close range after an away corner.

For a while the Bantams were in the ascendency, and Joe Lumley was called into action not long afterwards, diving to his right to make sure Graham Alexander’s side didn’t double their lead. They were on the ropes as WBC Super-Lightweight champion, Dalton Smith, watched on.

Henrik Pedersen’s men did rally, of course, with momentum swinging back and forth as the home side pushed for an equaliser, Slattery had a half-chance after being found by Max Lowe - but couldn’t get the ball out of his feet… Lumley was called into action also, though, diving to keep out a deflected effort just past the hour mark.

It was just after that that Pedersen decided he’d seen enough. On came Morrison for his debut, joined by Mason Burstow and Sil Swinkels, with Barry, Mitchell and Cooper making way.

They huffed and they puffed, but nothing was coming off for the hosts. A couple of times some nice interplay saw them work their way into the Bradford box, but the visitors looked as likely to get a second as Wednesday looked for an equaliser. There wasn’t a great deal of quality on show.

Ricardo Santos came on - another debut - as he took over from Gabriel Otegbayo, but it wasn’t a substitution likely to change things too much. McCracken was barely tested after the break, and the Owls were simply too sloppy in possession and - despite the effort of their supporters - couldn’t rise to the occasion.

This evening won’t be the last time that David Storch watches Sheffield Wednesday lose, and it’s his first taste of a Wednesdayism that we’ve all grown to know so well… He’ll get used to it.

Defeat tonight won’t define the Owls’ season, and on another night they’d have scored twice in the first half and won it. They didn’t, and they didn’t - and it ended 1-0.

It became apparent earlier this week that the Owls were closing in on a move for the 19-year-old right-winger, with Alex Miller explaining that Wednesday had moved to the front of the queue despite interest from Europe and the Championship.

Following that, The Wednesday Word explained that Morrison had arrived in Sheffield as they sought to complete his deal, and that they were confident that they’d be able to get it done in time for the Northern Ireland international to be in contention against Bradford City this evening. He’ll wear number 20.

It’s now been confirmed that Morrison - who got 16 goals and assists in the Premier League 2 last season - has come on board at Hillsborough, and that he is indeed available for selection tonight should Henrik Pedersen want to use him immediately.

“It’s a massive club with great history and even better fans,” he said. “So I’m glad to get it over the line and I’m excited to play in front of everyone.

“Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it. It’s a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.

“Henrik was speaking to me and just gave me his idea of what he wants to happen, and he sold it to me. I’ve just wanted it to come ever since… He wasn’t really talking about my footballing ability, he was just talking to me as a person. He wants me to become a better person, so that was eye-opening because I didn’t expect it from the gaffer.

“A lot of gaffers don’t do that, but the only thing he was saying was, at the end of the loan, what type of person would you want to become. He’s a great guy and I can’t wait to play under him… I want to show to the fans and show to the gaffer and show to everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here.”

Meanwhile, Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said, “Kieran is a player with huge potential – and he has already represented his country and made his mark around Liverpool’s first team. During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high-intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.

“Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person. It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran’s enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started.”

Pedersen is likely to have a new face to call upon with Kieran Morrison set to join the club on loan from Liverpool, and there seems to be a suggestion that Ricardo Santos and Billy Mitchell are nearing their debuts. Di’Shon Bernard, meanwhile, is progressing well.

The opposition manager, Graham Alexander, gave an update on his side today, explaining that Callum Connolly had been training despite a late knock against Peterborough United, but that Tyreik Wright would be missing.

“Callum had a bit of a sore forehead,” he said. “He got kicked in the head just before he came off - but everyone has been out there today that was part of it on Saturday. We’ve got a reasonably clean bill of health, it’s just Tyreik who is missing… Everyone else is pretty good.”

The Owls midfielder, who has had a number of injury issues during his young career, was handed a first start for Wednesday in their League One opener against Leyton Orient, but had to come off very early in the game after sustaining a problem with his knee.

Now it has been confirmed by Henrik Pedersen that Onyango’s injury is a serious one, and that he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he works his way back to full fitness.

"Tyler has injured his ACL,” the Dane told the media today. “And I think he will be out for many months. It is so sad for him and for everyone.”

He also went on to mention Yan Valery, Ricardo Santos and Billy Mitchell, saying, “Yan has trained the whole week and is available for us.

"Ricardo has trained well and done everything so that is very positive. Billy, same for him, he trained last week and all of this week."

The Owls take on Bradford on Thursday evening as a bumper crowd heads to Hillsborough for Wednesday’s first home match of the campaign, with over 32,000 people expected for what could be the biggest attendance of any League One game this season.

Henrik Pedersen has seen 13 new players come through his door at Middlewood Road in what has been an incredibly busy summer, and there are more new faces expected before the transfer window slams shut early next month.

One of those faces is set to be Morrison, who is looking set to swap Merseyside for Yorkshire on a season-long loan, and The Wednesday Word understands that there’s a growing confidence that the details could be finalised in time for the talented 19-year-old to potentially make the matchday squad on Thursday.

It’s understood that there was lots of interest in Morrison – who made his debut for Northern Ireland in June – but that it has been decided that Wednesday is the best place for him to be for the campaign ahead. It’s believed that, like with Manchester City and Manchester United, Liverpool have been impressed with how Pedersen has been able to develop young players, and would like to see similar progress from their young winger.

As previously reported, the right-wing position is one that the Owls had identified as a priority before the closure of the window, and Morrison is a player who’s shown a lot of quality there cutting in onto his left foot.

The teenager made his senior debut for the Premier League giants in the Carabao Cup last year, and has impressed in preseason over the summer after notching up 22 goals and assists across all competitions in 2025/26.

At the time of writing, it’s not thought that Morrison has made his way to Sheffield, but there is hope that things could be wrapped up in time for him to be registered before tomorrow’s midday deadline so that he’s available for Pedersen when the Bantams come to town.
