Jerry Yates was on the scoresheet for the Owls once again, scoring inside the first two minutes, but Jordan Ayew got a late equaliser to make sure the points were shared. Pierce Charles, meanwhile, put on a goalkeeping masterclass.

Henrik Pedersen

“I saw another massive effort today. Of course it is disappointing to concede the late goal, but the players gave everything they could to get the win. We have played against a top team with Premier League players who needed to win to get out of the bottom three, so we knew we would come under maximum pressure.

“The boys are always looking to support each other. We want to play like there are no mistakes; there is only the next action… I feel there are a lot of things we could have done better on the ball but the discipline we showed was so good and we had a high stability of mental performance.

“The atmosphere today was magic. We have seen so much good support but this was the best atmosphere we have had this season; the energy we get from the fans is amazing.”

Gary Rowett

“It’s hugely frustrating,” Rowett said, as quoted by Hayters. “What you can’t do is give them a lift. And what we do is give them a lift after a minute and a half. It’s quite ridiculous to be honest.

“It was more or less the first time they put the ball in the box. They land on it, they score, they’re a bit more aggressive to get to the ball. I’ve said it before, that’s been a huge problem for us.

“Then it allows them to sit in at 5-4-1, it allows them to block it up, it allows them to be quite defensive but do it quite well.

“We’ve had most of the ball, we’ve had all of the chances. They have had one shot on target, we’ve had five or six incredible chances. The keeper’s made four or five very good saves. We’ve hit the post, we’ve hit the bar, and I’d say we’re disappointed with how we’ve played, but we’ve done more than enough to win a game.”

Charles, who is still just a 20-year-old, put on an absolute masterclass at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon. His 11 saves were the most any Championship goalkeeper has pulled off since he did the same - also against Leicester City - back in August. This outing was different, though.

After his world-class stop from Oliver Skipp, the double-save that kept out Stephy Mavididi and Luke Thomas and the phenomenal effort to stop Jordan Ayew from getting a winner, there was no doubt about who was Man of the Match. There were other big moments, too.

So it’s truly miserable that this evening, amid all the praise and all the positivity, the former Manchester City youngster was subjected to racist comments from a cowardly individual who frankly has no place in modern society.

We don’t know who they are, or who they support, because they’re faceless - as so many of them are. His flurry of racist comments on Charles’ Instagram were met with the sort of reaction that you’d hope for - and expect.

The club said their piece, too.

Pierce Charles racism ‘deplorable on every level’

A statement from them this evening read, “Sheffield Wednesday are aware of disgraceful and completely unacceptable racist messages directed towards one of our players on social media following Monday’s game against Leicester.

“The club condemn in the strongest tone any form of racism or discrimination and will work side by side with the relevant authorities to bring the offenders to justice… It is not the first time we find ourselves in this position. It is deplorable on every level.

“Our zero-tolerance stance remains steadfast and unequivocal. Racism is cowardly. It has no place in society. We stand together and only together can we stamp it out.”

It’s incredibly depressing that in the year 2026 we’re still dealing with this. It’s a minority, that’s what we always caveat this with, but minority or not - it’s still happening.

Pierce won’t let it bother him too much, he won’t let a brilliant Easter for the Charles family be ruined by a dickhead with a keyboard. I’ve had the chance to chat with him many times over the years, and he’s got a far better head on his shoulders than I - and many others - had at his age.

He’ll know that this cretin with their private account and default profile picture will never achieve what he will. By 20 he’s one of the hottest goalkeeping properties in Europe, he’s an international footballer, he’s got the adoration of a fanbase that loves him. Some racist with a keyboard shouldn’t detract from what was a truly brilliant display at S6.

Negativity often sticks more than positivity, that’s an unfortunate fact of life, but Pierce is so much bigger than some troll online with nothing better to do. And I’m certain will see him on some grand stages in the future. He’ll have the sort of future that some idiot with letters and numbers for a username can only dream of.

Jerry Yates gave the Owls a very early lead as he prodded home from close range, but their hopes of a first home win of the season were hit late on as Jordan Ayew grabbed a late equaliser with an excellent strike past Pierce Charles.

It was the only time they were able to beat the goalkeeper amid what was a superb performance from him, but it did mean that the wait for a Hillsborough victory will continue a bit longer.

Pedersen spoke positively about his team’s efforts against an expensively assembled opponent, praising their culture and togetherness.

“It was a very, very intensive game,” he said afterwards. “Normally a game will settle after a period, but I don’t think this game ever settled. What a game, and what a cultured performance from the boys to leave it all on the pitch today. big respect to them…

“The team was the best player…”

“I think the team was the best player. We played against a strong individual team like Leicester, with so much individual quality. I think in the first half we competed very well, and we also had periods on the ball - but it was a defending game.

“In the second half we didn’t have the ball very much. But the boys showed ‘no evaluation, only next action’ and stayed together. They kept running, kept fighting, and showed togetherness and discipline. It was a strong culture game.”

The Owls manager went on to praise the club’s incredible fans, too, after they roared on the team at S6 once again despite the ongoing challenges.

“They were amazing,” he added. “It’s the best home game of the season. Their support, their singing, you could feel their energy everywhere. You could feel the support, and they were really amazing… From an atmosphere perspective, it was the best at home in the season. They’re Premier League level.”

They were so, so close to securing their first home victory of the campaign, but the spoils wouldn’t even have been shared if it wasn’t for the man between the sticks.

It took just over a minute for the Owls to break the deadlock. It was the second time that Wednesday had gone 1-0 up against the Foxes, and the hope was that this lead would last longer than the last one. They held on until the second half back in August, with the hosts going on to secure an 87^th-minute winner on a noisy day the King Power Stadium.

That day was a big one for Wednesdayites… It was the first day of the season and protests against their under-fire chairman were rife. The home fans showed brilliant support for their Yorkshire counterparts in Leicestershire, and as a ‘Dejphon Chansiri Out’ flyer took place overhead, there was a sense of defiance in the air.

A lot has happened since then. We’ve had two preferred bidders, a truckload of misery and plenty of drama… The sense of defiance, however, has gone nowhere. The players continue to run themselves into the ground, and frankly it’s a surprise that the fans have got any voices left.

A noisy Hillsborough once more

They were at it again at Hillsborough, as the now familiar ‘Everywhere we go’ chant echoed around their blue and white home. On the pitch there were changes, with Nathaniel Chalobah coming into the XI, and Jamal Lowe returning after international duty – Jarvis Thornton and Charlie McNeill made way. Another swap saw Tayo Adaramola replace Sean Fusire.

Elsewhere, there was no place for Joel Ndala in the squad after it was noted that he didn’t partake in the shuttle runs post-Stoke City. There’s probably more to come on that front.

Spurred on by their home fans, Wednesday burst out of the blocks. Svante Ingelsson’s early corner caused havoc in the Leicester box, Gabriel Otegbayo nudged it goalwards and Jerry Yates was on hand to poke home. It wasn’t pretty, but who cares? 1-0.

Unsurprisingly it didn’t take long for the visitors to turn the tide. The Owls have spent plenty of the season with their backs against the wall, and this was to be no different. Abdul Fatawu fired wide a few minutes later, and Henrik Pedersen’s men had to strap themselves in.

There was space for Leicester, too. And if it wasn’t for the extremely talented youngster between the posts for the Owls, they’d have found a goal or two. His first stop – and his most impressive – showcased some incredible reflexes to keep out Oliver Skipp from close range… If he hadn’t got a hand on it, it was flying into the top corner.

The Northern Ireland international went on to keep out Stephy Mavididi and Luke Thomas, and thanks to him the hosts were able to go into the break with a rare lead.

Given the quality in their squad, Leicester are massively underachieving this season – points deduction or not. So it was always expected that they’d start to turn the screw as the game went on. It was Wednesday who started the second half better, though, with Liam Palmer breaking forward only to see his clipped cross-cum-shot go wide of the mark. One goal has never been enough, but as Jordan Ayew hit the post with a header there was a growing feeling of ‘Could this finally be the one?’ for the shirt-swinging home support.

73 minutes gone, and those hopes should’ve ended. Charles was at it again, though, making a brilliant double save as neither Stephy Mavididi nor Ricardo Pereira could find a way past him.

Palmer came off for Sean Fusire not long afterwards, following on from Olaf Kobacki’s arrival in place of Nathaniel Chalobah, but Gary Rowett’s men continued to turn the screw. A looping header hit the bar, but still the home side clung on.

With 10 minutes left to go, Pedersen dug into his bench once again. This time it was Thornton and McNeill who were introduced, with Jamal Lowe and Jerry Yates having run their race. Leicester’s substitutes had 557 Premier League appearances between them – Wednesday’s had none. Squeaky bum time, then

And then the inevitable came… It was Ayew who got it, firing a brilliant strike past Charles from range. A special strike was going to be needed to beat the Owls stopper, and the Ghanaian legend certainly found one as he struck low and hard into the bottom corner. 1-1, and the hosts had some defending to do.

Leicester kept knocking, and with eight minutes added would get another chance or two. Unfortunately for them, there was a 20-year-old who had no intentions of letting them find a winner. Mouths were agape as he flew through the air to stop Ayew from grabbing a second, and that was that.

Another point for Wednesday – up those -5 Owls. They still don’t know what’s happening next season, but they do know that – for now at least – they have a very good goalkeeper to call upon.

Wednesday don’t have many more chances left to make sure they don’t end the 2025/26 campaign without a victory at S6, and Henrik Pedersen will be desperate to see his side put in a performance when the Foxes come to town.

The hosts do have a host of absentees due to injury, with the likes of Liam Cooper and Di’Shon Bernard among those that have been out of action for some time – and aren’t expected back this season – while George Brown is set to play against Wigan Athletic for the U21s tomorrow before being reconsidered at first team level.

Another player who could be missing from this afternoon’s squad is Manchester City youngster, Joel Ndala, who it was noted was absent from the post-match runs at Stoke City after defeat at the bet365 Stadium on Friday night.

Elsewhere, it also remains to be seen if any further action will be taken regarding two as yet unnamed players who turned up late for the departure to Staffordshire a few days ago. As previously reported by The Wednesday Word, both were left on the bench on Good Friday.

Leicester City team news

As for visitors, they could be without Jordan James after his injury during the international break, while Victor Kristiansen, Harry Souttar and Aaron Ramsey are all long-term absentees.

Leicester boss, Gary Rowett, has urged his side to build on their comeback against Preston North End, insisting that they won’t be able to take Wednesday lightly even with their torrid run of form.

“We cannot go to Hillsborough with any sort of attitude that suggests we don’t have to do what we did on Friday,” he said, as quoted by the club’s official website. “We have to go with the same energy, the same determination, the same battling qualities. Then our qualities, hopefully, will create opportunities for us.

“But if you go there with anything less, it’s a difficult game because everyone expects you to go and win. We have to make sure we do everything right. If we do, we give ourselves a fantastic opportunity. The last three performances have been outstanding, but we’ve got to go and do that.

“Nobody’s going to give it to us. We’ll make sure we rest and recover and get the lads ready to go again.”

The Wednesday Word reported yesterday that the American businessman, who is hopeful of completing a takeover of the Owls, had spent the afternoon watching Henrik Pedersen’s men against Stoke City - doing so in the company of a couple of Arctic Monkeys, Milburn, and the great Richard Hawley.

Now, as he seemingly prepares to leave the UK, he has taken to social media to give some details on his trip around the Steel City - noting some of those that he’s been able to spend time with since arriving.

There is still some way to go in Arise’s takeover bid as discussions continue to take place, but Storch is saying all the right things as things stand - at Wednesdayites like what they’re hearing.

Another amazing week in Sheffield with so many special moments. Every time I come here, I fall more in love with this city and its people, who have been so warm and welcoming.

Great interactive Q&A with the SWFC staff at Hillsborough; their loyalty is admirable. We will restore joy and pride to the offices as we create a culture of excellence.

I’ve been impressed with the strong civic leadership I’ve seen from Mayor Oliver Coppard and Kate Josephs. I have further enjoyed building a great relationship with Clive Betts. Also loved my time with Sheffield Wednesday Legend, David Hirst, who still has so much passion for the Owls.

My team and I are working on so many important initiatives so that we can hit the ground running once we take over this wonderful club. Most notably; improvements to Hillsborough and the design of our kit and crest (stay tuned!😉).

Had the opportunity to host a lunch at the outstanding new restaurant in the City Centre; Maria. You guys have to try it! We were joined by Lord Blunkett who enlightened us with his many stories spanning 75 years of genuine love for the club through the good times and not so.

I finished my visit, stopping in at the Broomhill Tavern, relaxing over a pint with some new friends watching our match against Stoke City… I’d like to wish everybody a very Happy Easter weekend as we continue into next week heads down on this journey to rebuild this incredible football club.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Lamine Cisse were the two that found the net as the Potters scored once in each half to secure their first league double over the Owls since the 1969/70 season.

Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke, he said, “We were nowhere near fluid throughout the game. We were at times, but we looked laboured in movement and passing. We created good openings and should have had more chances on goal if we’d had been more awake.

“We got the game done, a clean sheet and 54 points, more than the entirety of last season. You talk about incremental improvement, that is there for everyone to see. It was hard. You’re on a hiding to nothing because people expect you to win and score a avalanche of goals. That hasn’t happened.

“They’ve got lots of good players. They’ve lost some and gained some. Sheffield Wednesday are young and they’ve been through the mill in the past few seasons.

“We’ve had eight players to work with whilst others are injured, coming back or on international duty. Logistically it is tough; to get the game won like that was pleasing.”

The Owls boss waxed lyricaly about the noisy away end after thousands of Wednesdayites made themselves heard in Staffordshire, and insisted that theyr’e desperate to give the fans something to shout about before he end of the campaign.

As per the club’s official website, he said, “You could feel after the game we were all a magnet to them because we want to go over and say thank you.

“We appreciate what they are doing and what we have together with them, because it’s special. Our fans are special. You can feel in the dressing room how much they mean to the players and how disappointed the players are for them with the result.

“What they are doing is amazing, and we would love to pay them back.

“Again, we’ll do everything on Monday to give them a top performance, where they can identify with the performance. We would love to give them a win again.”

Another packed away end sang their hearts out as they watched the 32nd defeat of a truly torrid campaign. They’re not going to let the football ruin a good day out.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Lamine Cisse got the goals as the hosts claimed a 2-0 victory, with a late rally from Henrik Pedersen’s men not enough to spark any sort of comeback.

The first important moment of the game had nothing to do with football. It was around the eighth minute when Stoke City won themselves a corner… Michael Salisbury stopped play, and all four corners of the bet365 Stadium rose to their feet, applauding in memory of young Potter, Oliver Royles.

Oliver, who led Stoke out a year ago against the Owls on Good Friday last year following the ringing of his end of treatment bell, sadly lost his battle with cancer last month after it tragically returned as leukaemia. The coming together of supporters, players and staff was a truly touching moment, and – not for the first time this season – showcased the togetherness that this sport can bring.

It came the day after supporters of Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and other rallied around Jaden Brown after a worrying social media post spoke of his struggles with gambling addiction. He spoke to The Wednesday Word this morning, confirming that he was safe and with his family – ‘God bless the football community’, he said.

Play resumed shortly after the stoppage, but neither side was able to really take ownership of the tie. Bosun Lawal drove a low effort wide of Pierce Charles’ goal, Sean Fusire picked up a booking for a late challenge, and Gabriel Otegbayo couldn’t connect with a bobbling ball in the Stoke box. Real quality was lacking, but battle wasn’t – Wednesday continued to fight their corner despite their desperate position.

But battle often isn’t enough, as we’ve seen so many times this season. In a game that had nothing in it, the hosts broke quickly after a scramble at their end, and Rak-Sakyi was left in acres of space to pick his spot past Charles and a sliding Dominic Iorfa. Jarvis Thornton had been left in a crumpled heap after a blow to the head, but the referee didn’t see any reason to stop play.

The biggest bit of quality from the opening 45 came from one of the men between the sticks… So much gets said about Charles’ quality with his feet that it often takes away from how good he is as an actual goalkeeper.

Seven minutes after their opener, Stoke found space in the box once again. Rak-Sakyi was about to peel away in celebration, only to be left with his hands on his head as the Northern Ireland starlet tipped his effort onto the post. It feels inevitable that Wednesday will have a fight on their hands this summer if they’re to try and keep hold of him.

Half-time came and went, and there were no changes from either side. The Owls haven’t fared well in second halves this season, and unfortunately that didn’t change this afternoon.

It took 12 minutes for Stoke to get a second, and it was Cisse that obliged. Charles made the save after a header on target, but it was straight to the feet of the Frenchman who couldn’t miss. 2-0, and game over… But given the racket from the away end of 3,262 Wednesdayites you’d think they’d just equalised. ‘Wednesday are massive, everywhere we go’.

Tayo Adaramola, Nathaniel Chalobah and Olaf Kobacki came before play restarted, but results this season suggested that chances of a comeback were slim to none. Max Lowe, Jarvis Thornton and Charlie McNeill made way.

Wednesday did improve, though, as the game progressed. Gavin Bazunu made himself big to keep out Kobacki, and Jaden Heskey fired an effort wide of the mark. The Pole proved to be quite a nuisance after taking to the field, but Stoke did seem quite content to see out the game with their two-goal lead.

Glances into the away end saw more and more bare chests on show, with shirts being circled aloft. Another act of defiance from a set of supporters that have had pretty much nothing to celebrate in 2025/26. ‘Everywhere we goooo’.

On the pitch their team huffed and puffed, but to no avail. Devlan Moses, who’s been in fantastic form at youth level, replaced Jaden Heskey… He’s one of 39 players that Wednesday have used in the league this season - no other team has used more.

Despite Wednesday’s pressure, it was still Stoke who went closest to getting the next goal. Once again it was Charles in the way, as he got down well to keep out Eric Bocat. Sean Fusire fizzed an effort just wide just before the final whistle, after a much-improved second half, but there was to be no sign of a comeback. 2-0 it ended, and the -6 remains.

Defeat means that the Owls are now winless in 34 matches - which is the longest of any side in English league history. Only Derby County (September 2007 - August 2008) and Macclesfield Town (January 2012 - October 2018) hold longer winless runs in the top four tiers (36)… It seems a real possibility that that unwanted record could soon be owned by the Owls’ too.

Six games to go, and the end of this season can’t come soon enough.

The 21-year-old centre back, who has played 32 times for the Owls this season, earned international recognition last month as he was called back up into the Republic of Ireland’s U21s. It was just reward for some strong performances in the Championship despite Wednesday’s struggles.

Otegbayo left Middlewood Road and was pictured training with the ROI youngsters at the FAI Headquarters in Abbotstown, Dublin, but wasn’t in the matchday squad as they drew 1-1 with Moldova on March 26th.

There was no mention of a departure, and a match preview on the Irish FA’s website named him in the squad for the following game against Kazakhstan, but the following day he was spotted back in training at S6. It raised a few eyebrows, and Ireland’s U21s went on to beat the Kazakhs 1-0 at Turkistan Arena.

Wednesday boss, Henrik Pedersen, has now explained why ‘Gabs’ left his international teammates, also insisting that he is ok to feature against Stoke City this afternoon.

“There were some personal things,” Pedersen told TWW. “That’s the reason that he left the camp… He’s fine, though.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s injury latest

Thankfully there are no fresh injury concerns for the Owls, although the likes of Di’Shon Bernard, Liam Cooper, Ernie Weaver and Gui Siqueira remain absent with long-term injuries.

Max Lowe and Nathaniel Chalobah’s recent returns offered a boost, while George Brown is on the brink of a comeback - although that will only come in the next couple of weeks.

Pedersen is also left with a late decision on Jamal Lowe after a long trip back from Mexico after Jamaica’s World Cup heartbreak at Estadio Guadalajara. It may be that he’s given a bit more time to recover, with Devlan Moses - on target again during the international break - could sense an opportunity for himself.

Looking further forward, the Wednesday manager has said that he expects everybody to be back available come the start of preseason, with none of those with serious injuries set to miss the start of the 2026/27 campaign as things stand.

The Argentine was arguably the best player that Wednesdayites had seen in years after he joined the club from Watford in the early days of Dejphon Chansiri, and he came so close to helping the Owls back to the promised land of the Premier League in 2015/16.

Promotion eluded them, unfortunately, and as the following campaign got underway multi-million-pound bids were coming in for the attacker that Chansiri quickly batted away. It didn’t go down well.

Forestieri refused to travel to Wednesday’s game at Norwich City amid speculation linking him with a move to Derby County and Newcastle United. A £7m bid from Derby had already been rejected. The noise had unsettled Forestieri and Carvalhal later admitted the player’s ‘mind was not in the right place’ to be involved at Carrow Road as Wednesday ground out a goalless draw.

He had already needed convincing by Carvalhal and Glenn Loovens to play in the season opener against Aston Villa a week earlier – a match in which he scored the winner. Chansiri, meanwhile, made his stance unequivocal: none of Wednesday’s key players were for sale.

Forestieri eventually issued a contrite apology to his teammates, Carvalhal, Chansiri and the supporters, describing his actions as ‘unacceptable and unprofessional’. But years later, he offered a fuller, more reflective explanation.

“I want to say sorry again to the fans because it was a very bad reaction from me,” he said. “But I also felt I was right. Every human being understands this: if you have a shop, and the shop next door offers you something better – and that next door was the Premier League – of course you think about leaving. Everyone would. And if the club had sold me and other players, then we wouldn’t talk about transfer embargoes or anything like that later down the line. It would have been a different situation. Some fans were angry with me, but they didn’t know what was really happening with Chansiri.

“My agent wanted to speak to him to explain the situation, but Chansiri didn’t want to speak to my agent. I went to the stadium to try and speak to Chansiri and he said: ‘Fer, I don’t want to talk.’ I was angry because we had just gone so close to going up and he didn’t want to speak to me about my future. I wanted to say: ‘I made a mistake but please, you need to sell players, you need to do something.’

“But he didn’t want to hear me. So my reaction was: ‘Okay, if you don’t want to hear me, then for the next game I won’t play.’ Maybe it could have been different. I was transparent in that moment. I could have faked an injury, said something was wrong and avoided everything. Other players might have done that. But I went straight and said: ‘I’m not playing because of this reason.’ I’m a transparent person. I always said I would die on the pitch for the fans. At that time, I was frustrated and it felt like the right thing. Because if he had sold me then, we wouldn’t be talking about this now.”

The talented 20-year-old has enjoyed a strong rise through the ranks at Middlewood Road, scoring plenty for the U18s and U21s as he started to make his name in the Owls academy.

And it’s not just his name that catches the eye, with some comparing him to the Manchester United star when he was scoring on a regular basis, Fernandes has shown flashes of his quality when being asked to step up at senior level.

Sadly, though, his fifth senior appearance of the campaign - against Swansea City in February - will be his last for 2025/26. The youngster has had some rotten luck on the injury front this season, needing surgery back in August, and his latest knock is one that will keep him out until preseason.

It’s not been easy for him…

A ‘tough season’ for Fernandes

“Been a tough season on a personal level,” he said today. “Having picked up my third injury this season, the last one has cut my season short. I thank God always, and will continue to keep my trust in him.

“James 1:2-3: Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, but you know that the test of your faith produces perseverance.”
