'Easy decision' - Callum Slattery signs on at Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday have announced the signing of former Motherwell midfielder, Callum Slattery, on a three-year contract.
The news of the Owls’ interest in Slattery was first reported by The Star’s Alex Miller earlier this month, and here at The Wednesday Word it was revealed last week that he’d agreed terms on a deal to join the club.
Now, with preseason having got underway, Wednesday have revealed that his move has now been finalised, with the 27-year-old penning a long-term deal at Hillsborough.
Speaking to the club’s official website after becoming an Owl, the former Chelsea and Southampton youngster explained how delighted he was to be on board for the club’s League One battle in 2026/27.
“This is such an exciting move at an exciting time for the club,” said. “I had options but ultimately when I knew Sheffield Wednesday were interested, it was an easy decision for me to make.
“It’s massive. The ambition is there and we want to be positive throughout the whole season. A club this size with that ambition, it’s just great to be a part of.
“It’s a clean slate for everyone, and to be joining as a new player and a new feeling around the club, it’s special.
“Out there on the pitch, I’ll be 110% all the time, every chance I get. I want to make things happen, be creative and help the team go in the right direction.”
“We believe he can play a significant role in what we are building…”
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, added, “Callum was one of the most sought-after free agents this summer and we are delighted to welcome him to Sheffield Wednesday.
“After an elite youth career, which included international recognition with England, he has grown into an accomplished midfielder at senior level.
“He has faced adversity at times and responded well, maturing on and off the field, and this has been reflected in level and consistency of his performances in the Scottish Premier League throughout recent seasons.
“Now entering the prime years of his career, we believe he can play a significant role in what we are building.”
Slattery joins Ricardo Santos and Jordi Liongola as Wednesday’s new arrivals ahead of the upcoming campaign, with many more expected through the door in the coming days and weeks.
