Young players are inconsistent, I don’t understand why people boo it’s ridiculous. His performance will get him a place in the team or be dropped. He’s on a learning journey. The booing just disadvantages us.
Credit to you, Dom, for saying what needs to be said. Otegbayo, like the manager, existed on the footballing equivalent of the Somme battlefield for most of last season, and neither of them gave up, nor complained publicly. The young man deserves great credit for this alone.
Otegbayo is third choice RCB behind Bernard & Santos. That is fine, especially as he is 21 and still improving. If he works hard and listens to his elders he will become a solid CB in his mid-twenties, which is when CBs normally mature. The boo-boys (small idiotic minority) are simply showing their ignorance and we should be telling them to shut it.
I sit in the South Stand, in row N, quite centrally, so I am not too far from the dugout. I have to say I heard nothing other than applause for Santos’ efforts, so hopefully Otegbayo wasn't too affected by this. Weaver is being nursed back to fitness, Swinkells and Bernard won't be seen for a while; the Santos and Cooper pairing was unlikely to last the full 90. What did people expect to happen? Anyone, who in the opinion of the manager, deserves to cross the white line in a Wednesday shirt, gets my 100% support.
100% - it's a doom loop. He's not going to get any better while he's being booed and we can't take him out of the firing line because of injuries. So really these fans are just making the team worse by booing. Smart.
Completely agree with every word. I was appalled when I heard people had booed on Saturday. He is a young player who is trying his best with an ever changing cast of people playing beside him on top of that. He has made some silly mistakes but that will change as he builds confidence.
I have seen some social media accounts that people have made videos mocking him and it’s just so wrong in my opinion
I believe the booing was born from genuine frustration, as both Santos and Cooper were linking up effectively and appeared to be without doubt standout players on the pitch where other's where playing well below the standards we require to get out of this division. While we as fans do not have access to the player performance data, if the metrics indicated fatigue, then Pedersen had little choice but to substitute Santos. Supporters should refrain from being overly critical of specific players and the manager this season, and instead reflect on our success last season. We currently sit at the top of the table with four wins, one draw, and one loss, and we are fortunate to face no point deductions. We could easily have been at the bottom of the league with only a single point had those deductions been applied. uto wawaw!!
How anyone could not see Santos was struggling to walk let alone run when he was taken off is beyond me. You don’t need metrics to see he needed to come off. Isn’t Weaver a left sided defender so would replace Cooper?
I'm showing my age here but I remember boos when a young Mel Sterland made a few mistakes early in his career - it was wrong then & its wrong now. The old chestnut about fans paying their money & being entitled to their opinion is rubbish - if you can't support the efforts of the team you support then stay away.
Like you Joe I didn’t hear any boos when he came on but I have seen the criticism on social media. For the most part, however, that criticism has been aimed at Pederson for persisting with Otegbayo rather than that player himself (obviously other than the usual idiots). Injuries have made it almost impossible to take him out of the firing line but I think for the players sake he should have been before Saturday. On the face of it Weaver seems to have done nothing wrong but doesn’t get much opportunity. I’m sure there are proper reasons (such as returning from injury or the contract situation, or maybe Weaver just isn’t as good as we think), but I feel like Otegbayo should have been protected 2 or 3 games ago and taken out for a spell.
Weaver is only just back from injury. So he's been coming on for small periods to manage that. Otegbayo has been injury free, so has been the go to while weaver is managed back.
Having said that, I assume weaver was available this weekend and he chose otegbayo.
But personally I thought otegbayo was superb when he came on..
I think your point about Otobeyo's age and inevitable ups and downs at this stage in his development is key Dom. He's a young player who, under other circumstances, would have probably gone out on loan to mature in a less pressured environment. Instead he's played a lot of football over the last 12 months. Yes, he's had a rocky start and has made significant errors, yes he does still look like he's got a mistake in him and commits too many fouls, but talking a longer view he also strung together a run of strong performances at times last season and has been physically robust for a young player. Without wishing to knock Dom, he looked a stronger option than an experienced Iorfa at times last season. Otebayo held his own against some strong Championship performers last season too. including keeping an on form McBurnie very quiet in the home game against Hull. Patience is needed.
