In Focus - George Brown: From cheese and ham toasties to hope of Sheffield Wednesday trophies
George Brown burst onto the scene for Sheffield Wednesday in difficult circumstances. His route to professional football isn’t your average development story.
Brown first joined the Owls in 2024 after a successful trial period at Middlewood Road. He was 18, and had impressed at S6 despite playing in a higher age group amongst the U21s. The academy head at the time, Steve Haslam, said that they liked what they’d seen from the youngster both ‘on and off the pitch’.
He may have been among teammates older than him, but that was nothing new for the striker. For years he’d been playing, and scoring, against grown men whilst with the Ultimate Football Coaching Academy in Leeds, honing his craft under the tutelage of former Arsenal, Brentford and Bradford City forward, Isaiah Rankin. His debut season in senior football with UFCA saw him score 47 goals in 26 games as he took the Yorkshire Amateur League Supreme Division by storm.
