Wednesday looked dead and buried at the Accu after Derensili Sanches Fernandes added to Joe Taylor’s opener to make it 2-0, but the Owls had other plans as they put up a late fightback to secure a draw in West Yorkshire.
An own goal from Ibane Bowat halved the deficit, and then Jamal Lowe levelled things up from the spot after Liam Cooper had taken a kick to the face. It wasn’t pretty, and over the course of 90 minutes maybe wasn’t even deserved, but the Owls headed home with a point and could pat themselves on the back for the character that they displayed to never give up.
Pedersen spoke after the final whistle, giving his thoughts on the tie.
“I don’t know what people expect to go to Huddersfield,” he said afterwards. “I think it’s to have no respect for Huddersfield to think that we can come here and be dominant for 90 minutes. If you see Huddersfield’s game, it’s a really strong team. If we go, ‘We are not happy with our offensive game against a strong defensive team’, then I think there are many teams that go from a game in Huddersfield that are not.
“We have big ambitions. And we want to be better, especially in the first half. It was not good enough. Defensively, it was fine. It was not dominant, but it was solid. Because they played a lot of long balls. And then the second ball and the transition, they are very, very strong. And then I think how we grow in the second half and then be so dominant in an away game in Huddersfield, I think it’s very, very positive.”
Next up for Wednesday is a visit from AFC Wimbledon to Hillsborough next weekend, and fans will be desperate to see an improved performance back on home soil.
