The 19-year-old signed a new contract at Hillsborough over the summer, and will now be given the chance to get some regular game time under his belt in the National League North.
A statement from The Mariners this morning read, “We are delighted to announce the signing of centre-half Joe Emery from Sheffield Wednesday on a short-term loan!
“Joe signed for the Owls from Charlton Athletic in 2025, where he signed his first professional contract on July 2nd. He would go on to make his professional debut in the EFL Cup against Bolton Wanderers, starting the match and playing 69 minutes.
“The 19-year-old made his first squad in the Championship against QPR and was an unused substitute, but his debut came against Bristol City, coming off the bench.
“On January 10th, Emery played a full 90 minutes against Premier League side Brentford in the FA Cup, also making three Championship appearances last season against Norwich, Southampton, and Bristol City.”
Meanwhile, the player himself said of his move, “I’m delighted to be here at South Shields for my first loan. This is a great opportunity for me to get my head down and string together a good run of games.”
“I love the way South Shields play football, it suits me very well as I’m comfortable on the ball, and I just can’t wait to get started.”
