Why ex-Middlesbrough and QPR man 'jumped at the chance' to join Sheffield Wednesday
As previously reported by The Wednesday Word, Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Joe Lumley from Bristol City.
TWW explained earlier this week that the 31-year-old shot-stopper was on the brink of finalising a switch to Hillsborough after terms had been agreed between the two clubs, and now it has been announced that he’s penned a two-year deal at S6.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Lumley said, “I jumped at the chance to come here. I was here last season and just got a feeling within that time of the set-up of the club, how big the club is, how passionate the fans are. It was a no-brainer for me to come here.
“I’m here to serve the team and serve the club, so it’s not about me. Obviously, I’m going to put my best performances in that I can, train as hard as I can, week in, week out, every single day.
“I’ve heard that the season tickets are selling out fast. So, I can only imagine the atmosphere is going to be exactly how it was when I experienced it before, which is perfect. I’ve played at Hillsborough as an away player too and when the ground is bouncing, it’s intimidating, which as a home team, you want that. And the old cliche, make your home ground a fortress, you have to do that. With everyone at the club, everyone involved, I’m sure we will.”
Meanwhile, Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, added, “Joe was with us last season for a short period and I know that players and staff alike are delighted to see him return to Sheffield Wednesday. His experience within the game is vast and he’s spent a significant part of his career to date playing in the Championship, which speaks to his quality.
“The group felt his leadership qualities last year and he will set high standards alongside the other senior members of the team. His relationship with Darryl Flavahan is also excellent and returning to a familiar environment, we believe he can settle quickly and make an immediate impact.”
Wednesday will now have four goalkeepers at St. George’s Park, with Lumley joining Logan Stretch, Jack Phillips and former Owl, Cameron Dawson, who is currently training with Pedersen’s men after leaving Rotherham United.

Def worth a squad place, very capable keeper to keep the No1 I’m sure we are looking for on their toes
Capable and decent number 2 but I hope we’re looking for a better /younger number 1.
