The Magpies and the Owls will face off on Tuesday evening at Meadow Lane as the two sides clash for the first time in a league fixture in over 14 years.
Wednesday have won five of the last six meetings between the two, and have the potential to go top of League One if they win and other results elsewhere also go their way.
Their opponents have had a rough run of late, losing four games on the bounce in the third tier, most recently to Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United. Paterson is eager to see them bounce back.
“One of the things I want to see on Tuesday is that early aggression and tenacity to compete,” he told BBC Radio Nottingham. “Two or three years ago, this football club was in the National League, and spent a couple of seasons in League Two, we should be up for every single game in League One. It’s unbelievable to be in League One, and rightly so for this football club.
“There should never be any game this season that we are anything but up for… There certainly shouldn’t be any sort of shortage of being up for every single Tuesday and Saturday game.”
The hosts will once again be without recently injured midfielder, Ollie Cooper, and striker, Luka Smyth, while the likes of Matty Platt, Lewis Macari, Dean Campbell and Emile Acquah are all also set to miss out.
