Restored to the starting line-up after recently returning from a long injury lay-off, Swinkels was dismissed in the 40th minute after bundling over Tom Bloxham as the forward looked set to go through on goal.
The controversial flashpoint swung things the visitors way after Davis Keillor-Dunn had fired Wednesday in front. A late strike from Seasiders substitute Jerry Yates rescued a point for the Seasiders.
Interim boss Matt Hamshaw told the media: “I sound like a broken record but disappointed not to get three points. I thought first half we were really good. We played with a lot more intensity, a lot more bite and a lot more forward-thinking play.
“We changed the shape slightly and I just thought we looked a real threat. I thought it was only going to be a matter of time before we probably get the second or third goals, and then we Sil obviously get sent off. I thought we handled the situation fairly well from then on in.
“There’s a mistake obviously by the keeper for the goal, which is frustrating but we all kind of make mistakes in life, don’t we? It’s just frustrating, really, that I think we should be sat here this week with six points. We’ve got two and that’s the disappointing factor. The positives are, I felt Hillsborough today and I think that’s going to be key.
“I love Bazza’s [Barry Bannan] kind of fire with their bench. I’m smiling now about it, but I just think it shows that these people care and I’ve just said that to them after. Look, people might say that whatever about this, that and the other but I know how much this players do care and do want to succeed, and that today I thought was shown in kind of the performance.”
On Swinkels’ dismissal, Hamshaw said: “I was worried at the beginning, if I’m going to be honest. However, he was last man and is going away from goal and would he have scored? There are a lot of kind of questions that would be asked. His touch obviously went away from goal, not towards goal.
“But at the same time, initial thought was, well, he was last man. But look, the referee’s made a decision and we can’t change that once it’s happened. And I thought the players saw the game plan out really well. We could have been a little bit better in transition.
“I don’t know who kept telling players to shoot from 70 yards every time we got the ball! That was a bit frustrating, and I thought as tidy up passes should have been a little bit better.
“However, if Mason’s goal had gone in, everybody had been talking about for years to come. So here’s what it is, and like I said, just just disappoint really.”
Asked if Wednesday could appeal the decision, Hamshaw replied: “It may well be. We’ll obviously come together as a group of staff and obviously the new gaffer will what he wants to do with that and will take that and move forward.”
Billy Mitchell is expected to be out one to two weeks after picking up a knock in the midweek draw with Cambridge United. Ali Al-Hamadi could be out a number of weeks while Reece James (groin) faces four to six weeks on the sidelines.
