Sheffield Wednesday defender confirms Owls exit - issues thanks
After 14 years of climbing up the ranks at Sheffield Wednesday, Mackenzie Maltby has announced his departure from the club.
The 21-year-old will see his contract with the Owls expire at the end of this month, and had been invited back to take part in preseason before a final decision would be made on whether or not to offer him a new one.
That choice was made on the back of a tough season on the injury front ended with a professional debut and some solid displays as it wrapped up in May. Now, though, it’s been revealed that he will in fact be moving on.
Maltby, who has been at Middlewood Road since childhood, took to social media on Saturday afternoon to go public with the news, thanking those that have been part of his journey.
“After 14 years of calling this my home, my time at Sheffield Wednesday is over,” he said. “I want to thank all the players and the staff for everything they’ve done for me, and I wish the club all the best for the future.”
It remains to be seen what will happen with fellow defender, Gui Siqueira, who was in the same boat having been invited back for preseaso, but with the club’s return now just a couple of weeks away, it’s likely that more decisions will be made in the near future - with both positive and negative results.
