It’s rarely an uneventful week at Wednesday, and the past seven days have been no different as Henrik Pedersen’s Owls managed to grab an unlikely draw from the jaws of defeat over at Huddersfield Town. At 2-0 they looked down and out, but a late flourish kept their unbeaten run going - Jamal Lowe, found the opposition goalkeeper’s water bottle afterwards, too…
A Callum Slattery yellow card in that game means he now has to avoid getting booked in any of his next 11 fixtures if he wants to avoid a one-game ban. Considering that game 19 comes on December 10th, he might struggle.
Elsewhere, Wednesday’s Head of Medical & Club Doctor, Taaha Nadeem, was appointed as the Medical Committee League Representative for League One at the EFL. He’ll be involved in advising the League on medical matters, and was voted into the position by his peers.
The U18s secured a 2-1 win over Hull City over the weekend, with James Kay may a long-awaited return after surgery earlier this year, but there was defeat for Sheffield Wednesday Ladies away at Thackley. The U21s are in action in a couple of days’ time.
Welcome to Sheffield Wednesday Mondays…
Here on The Wednesday Word, we’ve had plenty for you to get your teeth into. As always we had a match report and plenty of reaction from the Huddersfield game - including bits from a very irritated Terriers boss - but there was also a midweek win over Sunderland U21s that took place as well.
We had some updates on what’s been happening over on the North Stand, as well as exclusive interviews with the likes of Joe Emery and Nicky Weaver, with the latter being available to watch over on our YouTube channel.
Ricardo Santos has had a little bit of an injury setback, a couple of players have left the club on a temporary basis, and there was a piece on the difficult situation that Wednesday’s academy currently finds itself in. Oh, and there’s a play coming out about the Miracle of Hillsborough.
Elsewhere, we tracked down a couple of key people in the development of Joel Akpobi prior to his arrival at Middlewood Road, and you can find out more about his story in the article below.
In Focus - Joel Akpobi: The making of Sheffield Wednesday’s tricky up-and-comer
“Would you believe that when he was younger, Joel was teased at school for being rubbish at football. Personally, I think that made him work even harder to prove them wrong. I think it’s safe to say he has proved a point!”
And that’s that for this Sheffield Wednesday Mondays! We’ll be doing a new one every week to make sure you can see our best work, and if you want to uncheck the other sections, then feel free to do so…
