Sheffield Wednesday's newest signing reacts to Hillsborough switch
Sil Swinkels has become Sheffield Wednesday's fourth new signing of the summer, joining the club from Aston Villa.
The Wednesday Word reported earlier this week that the 22-year-old was on the brink of completing his move to Hillsborough after terms had been agreed, with the Dutchman have already touched down in Sheffield.
Now, as preseason preparations continue at S6, the club have announced that he has penned a three-year deal after a transfer from the Premier League outfit was finalised.
“The project brought me here,” he told the club’s website. “The people here made me feel like it’s a long-term vision and that’s something I want to be a part of. We all know the ambition and where the club want to go.
“At a club like Sheffield Wednesday, it’s natural that you’re going to have competition for places – it’s a healthy environment and I’m looking forward to it. I’m very happy to get this over the line.”
“A natural balance…”
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said, “Sil is a player we are excited to bring to Sheffield Wednesday. He gives us natural balance as a left-footed, left-sided central defender, alongside strong physical attributes and the ability to progress the ball effectively.
“His loan spell at Chesterfield was particularly impressive, where he made a real breakthrough and played every available minute over the second half of the season. At 22, he has strong foundations but still significant room for development, and we believe he will benefit greatly from the environment we are building.”
Swinkels has spent time at Bristol Rovers, Exeter City and Chesterfield on loan from Villa over the last 18 months, and will now be looking to try and solidify a spot in Henrik Pedersen’s Owls XI.
