'An unforgettable chapter' - Svante Ingelsson speaks as his Sheffield Wednesday departure for Stoke City is confirmed
Svante Ingelsson has joined Stoke City from Sheffield Wednesday in a deal that could be worth upwards of £1m.
The news of the 28-year-old’s impending departure was reported by several publications recently, including The Wednesday Word, and now it has been made official.
Ingelsson himself took to social media not long afterwards, thanking Wednesdayites for their support - and wishing them well as he moves back to the Championship.
“After an unforgettable chapter in Sheffield, it’s time to say goodbye,” he said. A huge thank you to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday - my teammates, the staff and most importantly the incredible fans. Your support has meant everything to me and my family.
”Sheffield will always hold a special place in our hearts. It’s where our youngest son was born, and our oldest son will forever be a Wednesday fan. Thank you for the memories, the support and for making my family and me feel at home. Wishing the club nothing but success in the future.”
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, said, “We identified Svante as a player we wanted to remain part of our long-term plans and made several attempts to secure his future at Sheffield Wednesday.
“We remained disciplined within the financial and regulatory framework currently governing the club during those discussions, where it also became clear that Svante wanted to return to the Championship should the opportunity arise.
“While we are naturally disappointed to lose a player of his quality, Svante has been excellent throughout this process, and his honesty and collaboration have allowed all parties to work constructively towards a solution.
“We believe this represents a fair outcome for all parties, whilst also giving us immediate clarity as we continue building the squad for the 2026–27 season.”
The Swede has signed a three-year deal with the Potters, and could potentially face his former teammates in a preseason friendly in Vienna in a couple of months’ time.
Thanks for being part of The Wednesday Word family. Your fiver a month helps fund the entire project - whether it’s the articles, the YouTube or the social media platforms. So your support is hugely appreciated!
