Simon Wilson's first words as Sheffield Wednesday announce him in key Owls role
Sheffield Wednesday's new Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, has spoken glowingly about the club that he's now officially a part of.
Wilson, 43, has plenty of experience in the game having worked at clubs like Southampton, Sunderland and Manchester City in the past, but it was at Stockport County where he really started to make a name for himself.
In his roles as Director of Football and then Chiefs Executive Officer, the former Sparta Prague and Ajax consultant helped lead the club from the National League up to League One over the course of six years.
The Wednesday Word first reported the Owls’ interest in Wilson weeks ago, and now - in line with David Storch’s comments on Sunday - he has been announced by SWFC on the day that the transfer window opens up.
Simon Wilson on Sheffield Wednesday
“Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football,” he told the club’s official website. “With a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out.
“The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths, and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them. That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club - particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.
“Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term. I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”
David Bruce gives his thoughts on Wilson’s arrival
Meanwhile, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, David Bruce, added, “Simon’s appointment is an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday. We are building for the future, and that requires experienced, high-calibre leadership at every level of the football club.
“Simon brings a rare blend of strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership, having worked at some of the most respected organisations in world football. His appointment reflects our commitment to modernising the Club, strengthening our football structure and building in a way that gives Wednesday the strongest possible platform for long-term success.
“We also recognise and respect the immense effort of everyone involved throughout an incredibly challenging 2025/26 season. The work ahead is not about disregarding what came before, but building on those foundations with greater ambition, clarity and alignment.”
